Ask most anglers to name the foods trout depend on and they will say mayflies, caddisflies and stoneflies. But when you look at the importance of midges for trout, especially in tailwaters, spring creeks and cold-water fisheries, these tiny insects deserve far more attention. Ask a trout biologist who has spent time looking at what…
Turn over the right rock in a clean, fast-moving stream and you may find something that looks more suited to a science-fiction movie than a trout stream. Understanding hellgrammites for trout starts with knowing where these large aquatic insects live and how they become available as food. A hellgrammite has a long, flattened body, powerful…
Why trout eat grasshoppers is an interesting question because a grasshopper doesn’t live underwater. It doesn’t hatch from the stream bottom. It doesn’t spend months crawling between rocks like a hellgrammite. It doesn’t drift through riffles as an aquatic nymph, and it doesn’t swim through pools like a minnow. Yet drop a grasshopper into the…
Sculpins for trout can be an important food source, especially in cold, rocky streams where these bottom-dwelling baitfish live alongside trout. When anglers think about trout food, aquatic insects usually get most of the attention. Mayflies, caddisflies, stoneflies, midges, scuds, worms, and other small foods can certainly make up an important part of a trout’s…
Scuds for trout can be an extremely important food source, even though aquatic insects usually receive much more attention from anglers. Mayflies, caddisflies, stoneflies, and midges receive enormous attention because their hatches can produce some of the most visible feeding activity on a trout stream. But trout do not build their diet around insects alone….
Aquatic insects for trout are one of the most important food sources in healthy streams and rivers. Walk along a healthy trout stream, turn over a few submerged rocks, and an entire food system becomes visible. Small nymphs cling to stone surfaces. Caddisfly larvae hide inside cases built from sand, gravel, or plant material. Midge…
Stoneflies for trout are more than a riverbank bug—they signal clean water, provide a year-round food source, and help anglers understand where trout feed. When most people see a bug crawling on a riverbank, they swat it away. Anglers know better. Stoneflies aren’t just another insect—they’re a key part of river ecosystems and trout diets….
