Every fall, on a stretch of stream where brown trout are spawning, anglers get a fascinating demonstration of why trout eat eggs—and how this simple food source can completely change their feeding behavior. A trout that has been picky all summer, refusing nearly everything but a tiny midge presented perfectly, suddenly sits behind a gravel…
Redd spawning gravel is one of the most important habitats in a wild trout stream, yet many anglers walk right across it without realizing what lies beneath their feet. Walk a trout stream in late fall or early spring and you may notice a patch of streambed that looks unusually clean, pale, and loosely packed….
Turn over the right rock in a clean, fast-moving stream and you may find something that looks more suited to a science-fiction movie than a trout stream. Understanding hellgrammites for trout starts with knowing where these large aquatic insects live and how they become available as food. A hellgrammite has a long, flattened body, powerful…
Sculpins for trout can be an important food source, especially in cold, rocky streams where these bottom-dwelling baitfish live alongside trout. When anglers think about trout food, aquatic insects usually get most of the attention. Mayflies, caddisflies, stoneflies, midges, scuds, worms, and other small foods can certainly make up an important part of a trout’s…
Trout energy conservation is really an energy budget. Every trout you’ve ever cast to is constantly balancing the calories it spends against the calories it can gain. Every twitch of a fin, every dash after a mayfly, every minute spent fighting current costs the fish energy it has to earn back through feeding. Understand that…
Ask a hundred anglers to name the first bait they ever used for trout, and a solid majority will say a worm — usually threaded onto a bare hook by a parent or grandparent and dropped into a hole below a riffle. It’s such a universal starting point that a lot of anglers never stop…
Mention leeches to most anglers and you’ll get a shudder, not a strategy. It’s an odd blind spot, because in stillwater trout fisheries — lakes, reservoirs, ponds — leeches are quietly one of the most consistent, highest-percentage food sources a trout ever encounters, and some of the biggest rainbows and browns taken from lakes every…
Ask any guide who’s netted a wall-hanger brown trout what was in its stomach when it finally gave in to gastric lavage, and crawfish parts come up more often than most anglers expect. Not mayflies. Not a half-digested sculpin. Claws, tail sections, and shell fragments — sometimes several crawfish at once, in various stages of…
Ask any experienced trout angler what single lure category has caught the most trophy fish, and minnow imitations will almost always top the list. There’s a reason streamer fishing has a reputation for producing the biggest trout of the season, and it isn’t luck — it’s basic biology. Minnows and other baitfish represent one of…
If you’ve ever fished the same stretch of water in April and again in August and come home with completely different results using the same lure, you already know that trout diet by season can change dramatically. Trout don’t eat the same way year-round. Their diet shifts with water temperature, insect hatches, and metabolism —…
